FTP Basics

Modified on Thu, 30 Jan 2020 at 09:09 AM

FTP is an abbreviation for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is a method by which files are transmitted through the internet. There are other methods of transferring data (such as HTTP and SMTP), but FTP was designed for fast, frequent, and large file transfers.

You will need to use an FTP program in order to transfer large amounts of content or files to your webspace. There are free FTP programs available for download on the internet. Please use the following links to obtain information about two of the popular FTP programs:

SmartFTP

FileZilla

Every program is different, but when making an FTP connection all programs may require the following 5 basic settings:

1. Hostname: Enter 'ftp.webhero.com' (If you are using our Extreme Hosting Windows plan, please see the *note at the end of this article.)

2. Username: If your account was created with us after March 2005, use your full domain name, without 'www.'. Example: yourdomain.com

3. Password: Your account password

4. Directory: public_html

5. Transfer Type: Use ""Passive"" transfer, rather than ""Active"" transfers

After you connect to your site, you will be able to easily move files from your computer to your website, and from your website to your computer.

Note: If you are using our Windows hosting plan, your FTP login information will be slightly different. Please use www.yourdomain.com as the FTP hostname (substitute your domain for yourdomain.com). Also, be aware that Windows servers do not allow usernames to be longer than 15 characters. If your domain is longer than fifteen characters, use the first 15 characters as your username.
